Comprehensive Digital Cinema Glossary from Arri

Comprehensive Digital Cinema Glossary from Arri

Established motion picture camera company Arri has listed online a comprehensive glossary of terms and concepts related to digital cinematography. A good resource like this (or 100 of them) cannot be understated for its usefulness. When it comes to digital cinematography, understanding the terms and underlying concepts of the technology, whether shooting Alexa or DSLR, is crucial to be able to utilize the tools properly.

Thanks to Arri and Quantel, the “Digital Fact Book” is a guide book spanning some 206 pages with hundreds of terms from “0:2:2 – Zits” that should be able to teach something to anyone from the greenest newcomer to the pro veteran. It even has been updated to include the latest references of 3D stereoscopic technology.

What I enjoy about the “Digital Fact Book” is that it defines the terms in simple short phrases while retaining the integrity of the reader. It teaches me without patronizing me.

I highly suggest you head on over to the Arri Digital Fact Book site where the terms are listed online or can be downloaded in PDF form. For those looking for something a little more introductory, Arri also has a section of the site devoted to “Digital Camera Basics.”

RED Epic and Scarlet Cameras By End of 2010?

Reading off Engadget, found at the comprehensive Reduser.net forums, Jim Jannard (founder of RED) has apologized for the "embarrassingly late" production delays on the Epic and Scarlet cameras. He explains the cause of the delay was a bug that took months to find and put a "bullet in the back of it's head."

Deciphering the Film Slate (Part 3): Twelve Examples of a Completed Slate

I find looking at other slates to be extremely helpful. When I was first starting out as a 2nd AC, it was useful to see how others applied the principles I had learned about slating. So let's take a look at twelve completed clapperboards.
