2010 has been a whirlwind year in the film industry. 2010 brought the proliferation of 3D (and digital cinema) taken to new heights. It saw major filmmakers like Roger Deakins and Peter Jackson put up flags in the digital camp. And at the end of one decade and the start of another, The Black and Blue experienced unprecedented growth.
Arri Alexa 2.1 Software Update Released
ARRI has released a new software update for their flagship digital cinema camera. Among its top features, the camera is now able to record up to 60 frames per second on SxS cards in ProRes. The rest of the update is devoted to bug fixes and cleaning up an otherwise great camera.

Roger Deakins on Digital Cinema and Arri Alexa: “Images are of a quality comparable to film”
Award-winning cinematographer Roger Deakins, ASC BSC has been shooting with the Arri Alexa recently and posting about it on his web forum. Deakins seems to be quite fond of the camera and defends it from those who decry the digital revolution by stating that digital cinema workflows “seem to me to have tipped the equation.”

First HDRx Footage from RED Epic Digital Cinema Camera
Not to be outdone by the Arri Alexa, RED has been prepping an HDRx mode for it’s Mysterium-X equipped EPIC camera that is similar in nature to Alexa’s high dynamic range capture process. The EPIC boasts a full 18 stops of range and two modes that allow the processing to be done in camera or in post-production. But does it look as good as many think Alexa does?

RED One Mysterium X Cameras Now Available to Buy, Original Sensor Dead
Digital cinema’s favorite color coded company is now taking orders for the Mysterium-X equipped RED One cameras. Mysterium-X sensors were previously only available as an upgrade and in the forthcoming Epic and Scarlet cameras. The sensor’s main draw is it’s ability to be more sensitive to light and handle color better, as Pete Jackson found out. But while the Mysterium-X being up for purchase is good news, it doesn’t come without a price…
